Flare for solo violin (2017)
The word “flare” is defined as a sudden burst of unsteady bright flame or light. In “solar flare,” a sudden temporary outburst of energy is created in a small surface area of the sun that boosts an effect far away. In “lens flare,” it refers to a photographic phenomenon wherein light is scattered in a lens system, creating an unexpected pattern according to the shape of the aperture. This piece takes inspirations from these ideas, and uses the violin to depict the characteristics of flare, with gestures that seemingly have no patterns or directions, and often go in unexpected ways. This piece is written for violinist Yu-Fang Chen.
